SB Independent, 7-20-24: Dems Step Up, Joe Stand Down

www.independent.com/2024/07/20/choose-country-over-party

I’ve continually called for Republicans to stand up against Trump and choose country over party. I’m now asking the same of Joe Biden, influential Democrats, and the rest of us. Do the right thing for the country — withdraw your nomination and endorse Kamala Harris as the Democrat nominee. Biden is fighting this decision but has begrudgingly conceded to consider it if there were a health issue, the American people support it, or if he is told he can’t win — check, check and check.

It’s the right thing to do; he is undeniably not at full capacity, has deteriorated while in office, and will continue declining. For partisans, Republicans have massive positive momentum over the past few weeks — two thirds support their candidate, while two-thirds of Democrats do not support Biden. For nonpartisans — it’s the right thing to do for integrity and for the country.

Aging is irreversible. It is a blessing to enjoy with the ones you love, not a condition to impose on the U.S. voting population. Biden’s diminished physical and mental faculties will continue to decline for the next 4.5 years. Deteriorating presidents is not a new phenomenon in American history, but we do not need to add to that history.

Joe and the top-level Democrat establishment should show integrity — do the right thing, not the easy thing. Privately knowing the truth while publicly supporting the opposite is not integrity. Democrats now have the historic opportunity to make the principled stand that Republicans wouldn’t. Family, advisors, and handlers are enabling Biden, propping him up to make him feel like he owes the American public another term in office. A good friend is the one who challenges bad decisions; Jill and others Joe listens to need to be that good friend. This is an opportunity for Democrats to do the principled thing rather than the expedient thing, in stark contrast to Republicans over last eight years. History will show the difference, but only if people stand up on principle and only if Joe makes the right decision.

For partisans, Republicans have massive positive momentum over the past few weeks - two thirds support their candidate, while two thirds of Democrats do not support Biden. For non partisans — it’s the right thing to do, for integrity and for the country.

This is not about Biden/Trump, this is about right and wrong. The decision should have been made early in the presidency, and certainly a year ago when there was a chance for competitive primaries. But institutional politics and the desire for continued power prevented that. Biden ironically cloaks this desire in a Trumpian view that “I alone can fix it.” But Biden has a good chance to lose and, furthermore, is part of a team that can nominate a capable reasonably aged candidate that can win and have a successful presidency. It’s human nature to push back against calls to step down; but we are electing a president, not a child.

Aging is irreversible. It’s is a blessing and privilege that should be enjoyed with the ones you love, not a condition to impose on the U.S. voting population and the world at large. Biden is still competent, but his body and mental faculties have demonstrably diminished. This will continue and is not just an issue for the next week or month — it is for the next 4.5 years. Simply put, it ain’t good and it’s gettin’ worse. Deteriorating presidents is not a new phenomenon in American history. Many have declined while in office — Woodrow Wilson’s wife ran the presidency for nearly two years after a stroke in 1919, and FDR was nominated in 1944 despite Democrats knowing he would likely not survive the term (he died several months after being inaugurated). We do not need to add to that history.

Democrats are shocked at the ability of good people to publicly support the continual lies, anti-democratic activities, and self-serving reality of Trump in the interest of partisan politics. They criticize Republicans for not taking a principled stand against an historically flawed person. They are now faced with a similar situation and have an opportunity to “walk the walk” and be vocal about the need for Biden to step down.

Joe and the top-level Democrat establishment — Pelosi, Schumer, Jeffries, and other influential Democrat leaders — should show integrity. Integrity is doing the right thing, not the easy thing. Privately knowing the truth while publicly supporting the opposite is not integrity. America stood by for eight years watching enabling Republicans do the expedient thing — publicly support a compulsive-lying, narcissistic candidate while privately either understanding his historic flaws or choosing to look past them. Democrats now have the historic opportunity to make the principled stand that Republicans wouldn’t. It may not yield a win in November, but it is the right thing to do.

Close family, advisors, and handlers should be ashamed of covering up the deterioration of Biden’s condition by propping him up and helping him feel like he owes the American public another term in office. They presumably feel like protectors but are actually enablers. A good friend isn’t the yes-man; it’s the one who challenges bad decisions. Jill and other close advisors Joe listens to need to be that good friend.

This is an opportunity for Democrats to do the principled thing rather than the expedient thing, in stark contrast to Republicans over last eight years. History will show the difference, but only if people stand up on principle and ONLY if Joe makes the right decision.
