Platform
We are fortunate to be part of a successful 250-year-old democracy project. It is time for a Constitutional Convention to implement a comprehensive system of non partisan improvements:
1) Abolish Electoral College
2) Eliminate gerrymandered districts
3) Campaign finance reform:
6) Universal/single-payer healthcare (could be construed as partisan)
7) Senate reform
a) Decide voting rules in non partisan way, then avoid changing regularly just to set up a single vote.
b) Eliminate/revise filibuster.
c) Eliminate ability of one majority leader to abuse power to avoid legal responsibilities. Examples:
1) Abolish Electoral College
2) Eliminate gerrymandered districts
3) Campaign finance reform:
- Public campaign financing for national elections (House of Representatives, Senate, President)
- Abolish dark-money funding mechanisms
- President: no change
- Senate: 1 (or only 1 consecutive term)
- Representative: 3 (or only 3 consecutive terms)
- Supreme Court: 18 years
6) Universal/single-payer healthcare (could be construed as partisan)
7) Senate reform
a) Decide voting rules in non partisan way, then avoid changing regularly just to set up a single vote.
b) Eliminate/revise filibuster.
c) Eliminate ability of one majority leader to abuse power to avoid legal responsibilities. Examples:
- prevented March 2016 supreme court nominee review/approval until after November election
- prevented vote on House's passed January 2019 election reform bill because "I get to decide what we vote on."
- held Senate vote on Green New Deal in March 2019 when the sponosors did not want it
